Met Gandhiji in 1915 in Hyderabad and then during the Champaran Satyagraha days in 1917;   he was then the Principal of Government College, Muzaffarpur; became the Acharya (Principal) of Gandhiji's premier institution, namely, Gujarat  Vidyapith; joined the Congress and became its General Secretary.
